The Royal Easter Show is Sydney’s annual multi-mode
extravaganza which brings the country to the city for 12 days of events,
competitions and fun for young and old.
Last year I took the Canon EOS R5 with the little RF 50mm
f1.8 nifty-fifty prime lens. This combination did an excellent job but this
year I tried a different kit in the form of the EOS R7 with RF-S 18-150mm zoom.
Although slightly down on ultimate image quality the APSC zoom kit is more
versatile, providing more photo opportunities.
Most of the time I used Av Mode at f8 outdoors and f5.6
indoors, single shot with electronic first curtain shutter. For moving subjects
I switched to Tv mode at 1/1000 sec.
The kit proved very suitable indoors and outdoors with slow
moving and fast moving subjects. Both the R7 and the RF-S18-150mm lens were
able to deliver very good results in all the conditions encountered.
The woodchop features professional axemen and now axewomen
chopping through hardwood logs with amazing power and skill. On the underhand
they risk removing a foot with every axe stroke. On the tree felling they risk
serious injury or death in a fall.
The R7 in Servo AF and H+ drive mode held focus on the
axeperson’s eye even when it was very small in the frame.
I used Adobe Denoise AI on the indoor photos as the original
RAW files are quite grainy.
Here are some of the photos:
